Materials

Materials that i find interesting, are innovative or i just really like :)

Corian:
I really like the way in which Corian is so versitile. With other materials you may not be able to create the strange but fascinating shapes that you can with this material. It also looks really professional and clean, which is perfect to have in a buisness. It allows for designers to be experimental with a material which looks really modern. The end result always manages to look effortless and laid back whilst still being able to make an impact on the people that are using the space.

Lightweight Fabric:
Fabrics have been used in various sircumstances to create a statement. This one in particular has a huge impact on audiences, perhaps because of the scale of it or maybe because of the unusual shape that has been made from it. I think the colour is also really striking and i like the way it is suspended and does not reach the ground so that people can look inside of it and really get a feel of how big the installation is. Fabric is another material that can be easily modified into unusual shapes so this again, like corian, makes it a good choice for public displays as you can really have fun with what you can create.

Staron Tempest:
This is a material that has been produced by Samsung. It is available in a variety of colours and is extremely hard wearing. This material is ideal for both residential and commercial needs for many reasons. For example, it is nonporous, which means that bacteria, mould and moisture cannot penetrate it. This makes it highy hygienic and long lasting. I also like the ways in which it can be moulded to almost any shape, so that you can create a interesting interior whilst the material is still durable and repairable.

Fibreglass:
Fibreglass has been around for hundreds of years and has thousands of uses. One of the most popular being reinforcing plastic and thermal insulation. However, as shown in the picture below, much more interesting things can be made from this material and it is available in an array of colours. I like the way that, eventhough it is quite an old material, we are still finding unusual ways of using it today. Also, the way that it can be used for practical things, because it is fire resistant, but also used to create sculptures and other art pieces.

Cardboard:
I really like the way in which they have used a simple material such as cardboard to create this desk. It looks really unusual and I really like that this could be a good way to recycle and reinvent old materials that are sometimes overlooked.

Undulating Lighting
The lighting fixture of this shop is visually stunning. I love the way in which the curves add interest to the design whilst the lighting gives a soft colour out. Even though it is only used in a shop i like the fact that they have thought about the design as a whole and not just opted for spot lights or fluorescent lighting, as seen in most shops. This feature on its own will therefore attract customers that may have simply passed the store by if they had fitted standard lighting.

Woodchip:
You would not expect woodchip to be a material that could create such a fluid and interesting staircase, such as the one shown here. I really like that a natural material that has been used for hundreds of years still has the capability to create something that looks so modern and would fit into almost any contemporary design, whether it be residential or commercial.
